Jim’s Actual Lesson

Trump calls for “one nation under one God serving one American flag.”

Pop quiz: What political party had the slogan: “One people, one country, one leader!”?

Hint: “Ich weiss deise Antwort!”

But before we get to all that, let’s have a beer!

This Week’s Show

Round Table Discussion

Ok everyone, our next show is the 100th special - we’re still not 100% sure what that means yet, but it does leave you about 100 hours to get your voicemail into us before we start recording - so get on it!

Perhaps most importantly, new patron Andi is just in time to get this and our 100th special on Patreon! Which is great, because those shows typically run a third longer and include a unique story - sometimes two! Worth a buck?

We think so and so does Andi!

We also got a fantastic iTunes review!

Great even for non-alcoholics!
by: CokeSux (United States)

I love everything about this show. I also don’t drink but it is a very educational show when it comes to being an alcoholic. I give this show a 10 out of 5

Jim is back to help us drink beers! Yay!

Jim is so awesome and we miss him so much, we should all buy him drinks and send him naughty pictures that will make him smile.

Voicemail!

Thanks so much :)

If you want to leave us a voicemail for the 100th episode there's still time (well... Two-ish days) so call us maybe at (513) 760–0463

We are greatly saddened by the news that Monty Python’s Terry Jones has been diagnosed with primary progressive aphasia, a variant of frontotemporal dementia. “This illness affects his ability to communicate and he is no longer able to give interviews. Terry is proud and honored to be recognized in this way and is looking forward to the celebrations.” - http://bit.ly/2cEY4vZ

Followup: Pastor Steven Anderson Deported from Botswana After Advocating for the Execution of Gay People - http://bit.ly/2dhKNHx

Steve: Today my wife said that some of my daughter’s friends had to end the sleepover early this morning because they had to go see Sunday Santa Clause. I was laughing out loud at that.

Did anyone catch Jim’s extra line in the show notes? See… we shared the entire W4W Show Notes folder with him some time ago and every once in a while he uses his powers for evil ;) - Jim?

Speaking of show notes we should say thanks to listener Johan @johanges

Headlines

NC Teacher Suspended for 10 Days After Stepping on Flag During Lesson on First Amendment Rightshttp://bit.ly/2cEXMVY

  • Lee Francis, Teacher at Massey Hill Classical High School, was suspended recently
  • He was teaching a lesson about the recent BLM protests doing a lesson on the Texas vs Johnson case from 1989 which overturned the ban on desecrating the flag
  • To demonstrate his point he stepped on a US Flag three times
  • Two students walked out with the crumpled flag and took it to the principal's office
  • Francis was perfectly okay with their reaction, saying, “… this is exactly what I teach: You don’t teach kids how to think or what to think; you teach them to go their own path,” he said. “If they feel so convicted that this is their cause they’re going to stand for, I don’t blame them. It’s an upper-level school for those who aspire to go to college and in that regard, we have rigor and expectations, so I treat them as such.”
  • He added, “Not only was the demonstration warranted and justified based on the court, it’s warranted and justified in the rights we have. This is the law of the land upheld by the highest court. Freedom of speech is not just defined verbally by something you say or write down on paper, but something that can also be a physical action.”
  • School administration didn’t agree and first put him on paid admin leave, then suspended him w/o pay for 10 days.

God-Lovin’ Church Going Fucker’s Didn’t Report Child-Rapist Pastor http://bit.ly/2cEXdLW

  • The pastor of Thornton, Colorado “Agape Bible Church” raped a 12 yo girl from the church
  • This is, unfortunately, not too surprising to us given our typical topics, but what is even more terrible is the fact that church officials knew about the assault and did nothing.
  • The arrest documents stated that both the head Pastor Darrell Ferguson and the girl's adoptive parents agreed that it would be best to not go to the police because they were concerned about what would happen to Wyatt.
  • They thought that biblical counseling would be sufficient to fix the problem and they were concerned about what would happen to Wyatt.
  • Police learned about the abuse because another parishioner was disgusted by the church’s reaction.

More News Of The Pious: Nahed Hattar Murdered For Posting A Cartoon On Facebookhttp://bit.ly/2dhL2m6

  • The Jordanian writer and atheist were assassinated in Amman because he posted a cartoon on Facebook making fun of Muslim extremists (see show notes)
  • He was on his way to the Supreme Court for a hearing regarding charges of offending Islam when he was killed by Riad Abdullah, a local imam
  • After his facebook post was widely criticized he removed the image and deactivated his FB account and issued an apology stating the image “mocks ISIS terrorists and their concept of heaven.”
  • Hypocritical Jordanian govt. a spokesman said they would hold the perpetrator to justice saying, “the government will respond with an iron fist to anyone who uses this incident as an opportunity to spread hate speech in society.”

A Utah Woman Is Running a “Christ-Centered Energy Healing” Business To Cure You of Your Money - http://bit.ly/2cEYhiL - http://bit.ly/2cEX8bd

  • Tammy Ward and her “Christ-centered energy healing” business — it’ll cost you.
  • Platinum - 25K / a
  • Gold - 14K / 6 months (28K / a)
  • Silver - 8K / 3 months (32K / a)
  • Don’t worry, it works!
  • “I wanted to make sure it wasn’t like woo woo, voo doo, you know,” Ward said. “I just didn’t know.”
  • She said God answered her, telling her to not only pursue that healing for herself, but to teach it to others.
  • This isn’t a doctor’s office. Johnson is getting ready to perform Reiki -– a form of alternative medicine focused on energy.
  • “I’m always hoping that Christ will come to assist in the healing,” “I feel duty-bound –- literally duty-bound –- to share this with other people,” Ward said.
  • “Heavenly Father told me that this is not just for the people of the LDS church,” Ward said. “This is for all of his children.”
  • “People who have, who are painting pictures of Christ, should they just automatically do artwork for everyone for free? They have a picture of Christ, it has Christ in the picture. What about people who are songwriters or singers who are writing songs about Jesus? Should they instantly and suddenly and for forever more make their songs free?” said Ward. “I don’t think it’s any different.”
  • Ward added she’s “prayed to know if this is OK with Heavenly Father, and I’ve been told that it is.”
  • LDS:
  • “We urge Church members to be cautious about participating in any group that promises-in exchange for money-miraculous healings or that claims to have special methods for accessing healing power outside of properly ordained priesthood holders,” said church spokesman Eric Hawkins.

MN Christians want transgender people to before use the bathroom - http://bit.ly/2cEXdvu

  • Minnesotans are the face of a new campaign by a national network of anti-LGBTQ organizations. The campaign, askmefirst, features Christians imploring schools, businesses, and “transgender activists” to ask them for permission before allowing transgender people to use the bathroom.
  • The Ask Me First campaign was developed by the Family Policy Alliance — formerly called Citizenlink — which provides a network of financial and political assistance for Family Policy Councils throughout the United States including the Minnesota Family Council.
  • The latter sent out an email last week stating:
  • Ask Me First provides women an opportunity to share their real life stories in the hope that other women and families nationwide will have courage to speak up for common sense safety and privacy policies – in public school restrooms, locker rooms, housing, government buildings, on sports teams, etc.
  • Their stories are also meant to send clear messages to school administrators and legislators that there are serious consequences for moms, daughters, students, athletes, sexual abuse survivors and businesswomen when men are allowed to access women’s private facilities!

Jim’s Story

Christian business woman suing for right to discriminate against LGBTQ clients - http://bit.ly/2cEXyOB

  • 62-page suit
  • Lorie is also a Christian who believes that God has called her to use her talents and her company in a way that honors Him.
  • Because of her religious beliefs and her desire to affect the current cultural narrative regarding marriage that contradicts those beliefs, Lorie wants to use her talents and the expressive platform she has in 303 Creative to celebrate and promote God’s design for marriage as an institution between one man and one woman.
  • Lorie believes that God is calling her to promote and celebrate His design for marriage by designing and creating custom wedding websites for weddings between one man and one woman only.
  • As part of discharging her religious duty, Lorie also desires to explain her religious beliefs about marriage on her website and in communications with prospective clients, including why those beliefs prevent her from designing websites celebrating and promoting same-sex weddings.”
  • But the big bad law won’t let her
  • Identification of plaintiffs
  • Plaintiff Lorie Smith is an evangelical Christian.
  • She is a resident of the State of Colorado and a citizen of the United States of America.
  • She is also the sole member-owner of Plaintiff 303 Creative LLC.
  • 303Creative is a for-profit limited liability company organized under Colorado law.
  • 303 Creative’s principal place of business is located in Colorado.
  • The first provision provides that it is unlawful for a person to do the following:
  • … directly or indirectly, to publish, circulate, issue, display, post, or mail any written, electronic, or printed communication, notice, or advertisement that indicates that the full and equal enjoyment of the goods, services, facilities, privileges, advantages, or accommodations of a place of public accommodation will be refused, withheld from, or denied an individual or that an individual’s patronage or presence at a place of public accommodation is unwelcome, objectionable, unacceptable, or undesirable because of disability, race, creed, color, sex, sexual orientation, marital status, national origin, or ancestry.
  • A “place of public accommodation” includes “any place of business engaged in any sales to the public and any place offering services, facilities, privileges, advantages, or accommodations to the public, including but not limited to any business offering wholesale or retail sales to the public.” Colo. Rev. Stat. § 24–34–601(1).
  • This civil rights action raises federal questions under the United States Constitution, particularly the First and Fourteenth Amendments, and the Civil Rights Act of 1871, 42 U.S.C. § 1983.
  • No shit!
  • Section on Lorie and her faith
  • Although she is a daughter, a wife, and a mother, Lorie identifies first and foremost as a Christian—a follower of Jesus Christ.
  • In addition to attending church and Bible study weekly, Lorie volunteers as an instructor in her church’s ministry program for toddlers, leads multiple women’s ministry events, and handles all of her church’s print and electronic marketing and website outreach.
  • Lorie’s religious beliefs are central to her identity, her understanding of existence, and her conception of her personal dignity and autonomy.
  • As a Christian, Lorie believes that her life is not her own, but that it belongs to God (1 Corinthians 6:19–20) and that He has called her to live a life free from sin (Romans 6:12–13).to
  • Lorie also believes that everything she does—personally and professionally—should be done in a manner that glorifies God. (1 Corinthians 10:31; 2 Corinthians 5:15; Colossians 3:17; 1 Peter 4:11.)
  • More biblical citations than legal!
  • Lorie has “sole discretion,” there are plenty of other places they can go, she’s in close contact with clients (she might have to talk to icky gays), she considers everything like color/font/etc, she will share biblical truths with couples, people would know we designed it
  • The draft website says “I firmly believe that God is calling me to this work. Why? I am personally convicted that He wants me – during these uncertain times for those who believe in biblical marriage – to shine His light and not stay silent. He is calling me to stand up for my faith, to explain His true story about marriage, and to use the talents and business He gave me to publicly proclaim and celebrate His design for marriage as a life-long union between one man and one woman. These same religious convictions that motivate me also prevent me from creating websites promoting and celebrating ideas or messages that violate my beliefs, so I will not be able to create websites for same-sex marriages or any other marriage that is not between one man and one woman. Doing that would compromise my Christian witness and tell a story about a marriage that contradicts God’s true story of marriage – the very story He is calling me to promote.”
  • Other businesses got to support marriage
  • But they don’t get to deny services to individuals who didn’t!
  • Free speech, content/viewpoint discriminatory, free association, surrendering rights, free exercise of religion, due process, equal protection clause,
  • Religious liberty and racial discrimination
  • Bob Jones University in the 70’s and 80’s
  • Amish and social security tax

Recipes

Homemade Vegetarian Spaghetti Sauce

Ingredients:

  • 1 Tube of Soyrizo
  • 1 or 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil to Sauté
  • 2 onions (large, roughly chopped or cut into thick half rings)
  • 1 head garlic, divided (minced)
  • 1 small can slice / diced olives (more if you like)
  • Sliced baby Portobello mushrooms, to taste but I usually add a lot
  • 12 ounces tomato paste
  • 30 ounces diced tomatoes or 6 hand crushed tomatoes
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 4 bay leaves
  • 4 tablespoons dried oregano
  • 4 tablespoons dried basil, garnish with fresh basil if desired
  • 2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • Cracked black pepper (fresh, to taste)

Procedure:

  1. Heat oil in large frying pan or wok until nearly smoking.
  2. Add mushrooms and onions, cook until mushrooms are browning and onions become clear and fragrant.
  3. Add half:
    1. Minced garlic
    2. Dried oregano
    3. Dried basil
  4. Add all:
    1. Red pepper flakes
    2. Salt
  5. Sauté until herbs are fragrant.
  6. Add Soyrizo, olives and remaining spices.
  7. Sauté until Soyrizo is thoroughly cooked and all ingredients are well mixed.
  8. Add remaining ingredients and sautéed mixture to slow cooker on high.
  9. Once sauce is bubbling reduce heat to medium and slow cook until dinner. My suggestion is a minimum of 1 hour.

Remember to taste frequently and add more salt, pepper, garlic, basil or sugar (to cut acidity) as desired.

What you get should be a thick and chunky Spaghetti sauce that everyone will love!

Round Table Discussion

Jim is so awesome and we miss him so much, we should all buy him drinks and send him naughty pictures that will make him smile.

Several attacks of note in the US in the last couple of days that merit a mention. It’s been a bad weekend in that respect.

Eight people knifed in St. Cloud, MN mall (none dead except self-proclaimed ISIS attacker) Pipe bomb went off in New Jersey on 5K run route. Nobody hurt. Race canceled. The explosion in New York City’s Chelsea neighborhood injured 29 people and another unexploded device found nearby.

Ugh.

Also, it’s Eid in Dhaka. Eid is the feast that marks the end of Ramadan. It’s also a fucking horror show of animal sacrifices. This year is especially poignant as high rains have caused some flooding. That flooding mixed with a bunch of backward ass fucking monstrous animal abusers caused the city to literally flood with rivers of blood.  This is just... wow... http://bit.ly/2ddmJ7p

So yeah.

Let’s talk about something that isn’t totally fucked up.

Tim from Atheism 101 sent a correction to last week's episode. What with being a professional in the field and all, apparently it’s super bullshit that Kale has more protein than beef. So… Apparently, that’s what you get for believing a vegan. Also, if you want to learn more actual things you should check out their show at Atheism101podcast.com

Speaking of, because we’re self-absorbed jerks, we’ve been pumping our 100th episode voicemail request without paying any attention to anyone else — so, Matt & Tim, congratulations on your 3 years of podcasting! That’s freaking amazeballs. And as a testament to how awesome the guys at Atheism 101 are, Tim has become a patron member! Which is… I mean, we just figured you were sharing the files — and we’re totally cool with that btw — but yeah thanks!

Now, back to our bullshit.

Speaking of patreon, they’ve set up an RSS feed now. So, patrons get special access to a secure RSS feed that will allow you to add our patron show feed right to your pod-catcher of choice. Which is great, because I can’t imagine a more poorly made app than Patreon.

We got a few voicemails for the 100th episode this week! Thanks to everyone who's sent us something for the 10th — it’s been pretty amazing seeing stuff roll in. If you want to leave us a message for our centennial show too, do so at 513–760–0463 or through SpeakPipe on the site the deadline is October 1.

We also got an iTunes review this week, which is amazing.

Lots of fun!

Been listening for about a year. These folks have a great natural dynamic together. The drinking along with the show is the best idea ever!

As a reminder, if you leave an iTunes review tweet, email or whatever us and we’ll send you a patron cut of the show.

Police officer fired for NOT killing a suspect - http://wapo.st/2ddnNbJ

  • West Virginia officer, Stephen Mader, had a confrontation with pistol wielding suspect during a domestic dispute
  • Mader said, “I saw then he had a gun, but it was not pointed at me,” Mr. Mader recalled, noting the silver handgun was in the man’s right hand, hanging at his side and pointed at the ground.
  • “I told him, ‘Put down the gun,’ and he’s like, ‘Just shoot me.’ And I told him, ‘I’m not going to shoot you brother.’ Then he starts flicking his wrist to get me to react to it,”
  • Mader, feeling that this was a ‘suicide by cop’ attempt decided it better to attempt to de-escalate the situation
  • Unfortunately, soon thereafter, two other cops arrived an killed the suspect who’s gun was unloaded.
  • Soon thereafter, Mader was informed that his contract had been terminated, because by not shooting Williams he had “failed to eliminate a threat”.
  • Oh yeah, and all the cops were white, but the dead man was black.

Ken Hamm, el-douche, lowered attendance estimates for the Ark Encounter - http://bit.ly/2cPlSyF

  • Originally stated that they expected up to 2 million visitors a year
  • A Cincinnati TV station said that around 300,000 people have actually visited with attendance around 4–7000 per day
  • If the current pace continues then they could get around 1.4 Million by the end of the year, provided that attendance doesn’t drop in the winter months
  • More good news too. The “up to $18 mil.” tourism incentive tax break is based on attendance. Fewer visitors, less money

PHILADELPHIA: Jesus Found Guilty Of Trespassing After Refusing To Take Giant Cross Out Of Apple Store - http://bit.ly/2cPnjgp

  • Philly Jesus is preaching a message of forgiveness after being found guilty of trespassing stemming from his arrest at a Center City Apple Store earlier this year.
  • “The son of man will triumph over these bogus charges,” said Michael Grant, aka Philly Jesus, ahead of Wednesday morning’s trial.
  • Grant, 30, spent 12 hours behind bars after his May 2 arrest inside the store at 1607 Walnut St. He claims he was lawfully in the store charging his phone since he is an Apple customer. Investigators allege that Grant refused to leave despite being asked three times because a cross he had with him was blocking an aisle. Grant claims the employee that asked him to leave was offended by his appearance and garb.
  • “I’m an Apple customer with an iPhone, on a family plan — Father, Son & Holy Spirit,” said Grant. “Bless up! May the lord have mercy.”
  • “I was found guilty of trespassing but I forgive them for trespassing against me,” said Grant. “For they know not what they do.”

Christian Pastor: The Reason Most Marriages Go Bad Is That Women “Believe They Are Equal Partners” - http://bit.ly/2cbEzpH

  • Pastor Chris Oyakhilome the Senior Pastor of Christ Embassy Ministries (a mostly online church, with a few physical locations)

“Husband does not mean the male partner in a marriage, husband means master.

“The reason for most problems in Christian marriages is the fact that women refuses God’s definition of marriage and form theirs. They believe they are equal partners.

“If most women had their fathers bold enough to talk to them, they will be very successful in their marriage and they will be very happy people. Most women have never been taught by their parents, their fathers particularly and that’s their biggest problem because they don’t know who a man is, they think he is another woman.

“Your secret is in obedience, your secret is in listening to your husband, your secret is in doing the things that please him. When you don’t do the things that please him, you take the role of a mother or of an older sister.

“A wise woman will always be an influence to her husband, the foolish one will always annoy the husband, make him mad, make him angry and when you make him angry, you will be the victim. Learn to listen to your husband, practice it, tell yourself that you are going to do it because that is where your beauty is.

“Once you stop listening, your beauty evaporates. You wonder why you are dressing and he can’t see it, he doesn’t remember your last hair style. Beauty is in obedience. That’s where the Glory is.

Shea’s Life Lesson
This week I learned that the worst thing about owls is the way they maintain eye contact when you put them in a microwave.

Jenn’s Actual Lesson
Did you know that Mother Theresa was canonized last Sunday? Proving once again that history can have very little to do with facts.

But before we get to all that, let’s have a beer!

This Week’s Beer

Sierra Nevada Big Foot Barleywine Ale
Suggested by Kyle the Napkin Pope

  • BA Link: http://bit.ly/2bTXfxc
  • BA Rating: 92
  • Style: Barleywine
  • ABV: 9.6%
  • Aaron: 2
  • Jenn: 1
  • Shea: 1
  • Steve: 2
  • Vice1331: 7

Kyle the Napkin Pope’s take on it:

I took two drinks and poured the rest of the bottle down the drain. I repeat: I poured perfectly good beer down the drain!! (Well, perfectly BAD beer) I think it tastes like rotten orange peels soaked in a mixture of rubbing alcohol with just a hint of pine-sol. I give it a smooth zero; it’s the worst beer I’ve tried so far.

  • Matt Wilbourn, an atheist living in Muskogee, Oklahoma, tried donating $100 to Christian charity in Oklahoma, the Murrow Indian Children’s Home, but his money was rejected by the organization after they learned his contribution was made on behalf of a local atheist organization.
  • Matt decided to be awesome by starting a GoFundMe and raised $28,280 which they also rejected
  • Now we find out that the charity is terribly broke:

To all my amazing friends. As most of you know by now, I am working as the social services rep for the Murrow Indian Children’s Home. We are a faith-based, non-profit organization that relies solely on private donors and our annual Pow WOW. This is our only fundraising event of the year. It will be October 1st, starting at 2:00pm at the Bacone Student Life Center. We are extremely behind on funds and donated items for our silent auction this year. We are also short on vendors. I am asking for y’all to just consider donating something. Anything.

  • “Blood was visible, and she had suffered severe trauma to her head and face,” the documents state.
  • Geneva was pronounced dead at the scene.
  • Juanita, Geneva’s mother, told investigators Geneva “was possessed by the devil.”

Jazmine Howarth died after ‘hanging herself in a bid to say goodbye to dead best friend’ - http://dailym.ai/2chLh2X

  • Jazmine Howarth died two weeks after her best friend Dionne Corbett
  • Ms. Howarth wrote letters saying she wanted to meet friend ‘one last time’
  • Her fiance found her hanged, but there were no signs she was intending to take her own life, inquest told
  • Coroner records Ms. Howarth’s death was down to misadventure

‘The letter to her mom indicated that whatever she intended to do she thought she could control it. She was very much planning for the funeral, she was looking at reading, planning for that. I know nobody ever expects it but we weren’t - it wasn’t even on our radar.’

  • Ms. Howarth’s fiance Brendan Cawley told the inquest: ’They classed each other as sisters, one wouldn’t do without the other. She broke down crying saying, “yeah but I promised I would go and get her”.

‘She said that she wanted to go and see her, go halfway to make sure she was alright. Two days before she died I woke up in the middle of the night and looked at Jazmine, she was writing on a piece of paper, I said: “what are you doing”. She said, “nothing it’s stupid”. I thought in my head that it must be something to do with Dionne.’

Iceland’s Government Will Uncover an Enchanted Rock to Appease the Elves. (Seriously.) - http://bit.ly/2chLAKZ

  • In Iceland, where more than half the population believes that elves are at least possibly real and a quarter of the country says they’re probably or certainly real, the superstition is having an effect on construction projects.
  • Because of a 2012 law to “protect Iceland’s elfin heritage,” the Iceland Road Administration is going to fix a situation in which a company that removed debris following a landslide accidentally covered up an enchanted rock.
  • Sveinn Zophoniasson, who works for the Bass road construction company, told the paper that his woes began in August 2015 in Siglufjordur, close to the site of the so-called “elfin lady stone” that was covered with earth following efforts to clear a mudslide from a highway.
  • After the landslide was cleared, the road was subsequently flooded and a colleague of Zophoniasson who came to clear the route was injured. Then industrial machinery began to fail and a journalist who came to cover the growing chaos fell into a mud pool and had to be pulled to safety.
  • “Nobody even thought of the rock,” even though the area is regarded as a sacred place in local folklore, said Zophoniasson.

World’s oldest fossil discovered 4 yrs ago in Greenland - http://nyti.ms/2chKRcK

World’s oldest fossil discovered 4 yrs ago in Greenland, just made known to the world. Scientists feel confident it’s 3.7 billion years old. That’s less than a billion years younger than the time that Earth is said to have formed, 4.6 billion years ago, and 220 million years older than the fossils previously regarded to be the world’s most ancient.

Some scientists are skeptical about the news, as the Earth’s conditions would have been hellish and inhospitable 3.7 billion years ago. However, the fossils that were retrieved from Issue in Greenland have certain formations which are apparently indicators of microscopic organisms known as filthy-stromatolites.

If the new date proves true, then it could mean that life is able to survive in harsher conditions than previously believed, and thus the chance of life existing on other less hospitable worlds, such as Mars, becomes a great deal larger.

UTAH: Lawyer For Escaped Polygamous Cult Leader Tells Court He Might Have Experienced “Miracle Of Rapture”http://bit.ly/2byZ5qj

  • Polygamist leader Lyle Jeffs may not have escaped from home confinement, but was instead kidnapped or “experienced the miracle of rapture,” his lawyer raises as a possibility in a new court filing.

“As this Court is well aware, Mr. Jeffs is currently not available to inform his counsel whether or not he agrees to the Continuance. Whether his absence is based on absconding, as oft alleged by the Government in their filings, or whether he was taken and secreted against his will, or whether he experienced the miracle of rapture is unknown to counsel,” Kathryn Nester wrote. “However, his absence prevents counsel from obtaining his approval and thus further prevents counsel from filing a joinder with the Motion to Continue Current Trial Date in compliance with the local rules.”

Ultra-Orthodox Rabbis Ban Women from Going To College and Getting a “Dangerous” Secular Educationhttp://bit.ly/2bTX6cP

  • Satmar sect are banning women from obtaining university degrees because “It is dangerous.” Written in Yiddish, the decree warns: “It has lately become the new trend that girls and married women are pursuing degrees in special education. Some attend classes and others online. And so we’d like to let their parents know that it is against the Torah.

“We will be very strict about this. No girls attending our school are allowed to study and get a degree. It is dangerous. Girls who will not abide will be forced to leave our school. Also, we will not give any jobs or teaching position in the school to girls who’ve been to college or have a degree.

“We have to keep our school safe and we can’t allow any secular influences in our holy environment. It is against the base upon which our Mosed was built.”

Christian who was fired after ‘anointing’ co-workers’ desks with oil loses religious discrimination case – http://bit.ly/2bTX8Sf

  • According to the Miami New Times, around 2 years ago, employees at the City of Miami’s Capital Improvements Program came to work and found cross-shaped oil smears all over their desks, “walls, doorways, and cubicles” – prompting authorities to shut down the department and investigate. Eventually, it was discovered that employee Eric Cheeley was the culprit. Cheeley, an enthusiastic Pentecostal Christian, was “anointing the office with oil” as a blessing.
  • Cheeley was already out in the field when his co-workers arrived at the office. They were a bit freaked out. One employee thought the crosses represented Santería; others worried it was some sort of workplace threat. Before long, police were called to investigate, and the office shut down for the better part of the morning. Back at work around lunchtime, Cheeley tried to explain what had happened.

“[I] was sitting in my cubicle crying; I thought I heard what, in my opinion, God telling me: ‘Look, just bless the department… and go on about your business,’”

  • He told police according to the Times.
  • The next day he was fired.
  • This month, after a long court battle where Cheeley claimed religious discrimination, the judge ruled that there was no discrimination, only vandalism on the part of Cheeley.

“Cheeley’s application of the oily substance caused actual damage to his employer’s property and disrupted its business,” U.S. District Judge Robert Scola Jr. wrote in his decision. “These facts are undisputed‘’

Paton Story: Catholic hospital turns away woman with bleeding IUD because birth control is a sin – http://bit.ly/2bTXQyF

  • When Melanie Jones sought medical care to treat a bleeding dislodged IUD, she didn’t expect to be turned away by her health providers
  • Unbeknownst to Jones, Illinois’ Mercy Hospital and Medical Center takes their Catholic beliefs very seriously, and since using birth control is frowned upon by the Catholic Church, so is giving Jones the care she needs.

"It felt heartbreaking,” Jones told Rewire. “It felt like they were telling me that I had done something wrong, that I had made a mistake and therefore they were not going to help me; that they stigmatized me, saying that I was doing something wrong, when I’m not doing anything wrong. I’m doing something that’s well within my legal rights.”

“I think my first feeling was shock,” Jones added. “I thought that eventually they were going to recognize that my health was the top priority.”

  • Jones left her doctor’s office, still in pain and bleeding. Her options were limited. She couldn’t afford a $1,000 trip to the emergency room, and an urgent care facility was out of the question since her Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois insurance policy would only cover treatment within her network—and she had just been told that her entire network followed Catholic restrictions.

“Generally, our protocol in caring for a woman with a dislodged or troublesome IUD is to offer to remove it,” Mercy Hospital said in a written statement.
